The Boyd’s Bear Country Retail Store and Museum is a 4-story, 125,000 sf building. The building is designed to replicate a barn with open timber framing on the interior. Smucker Company performed the installation of the metal studs, thermal insulation, sound batts, drywall and acoustical ceilings. All of the work on the project was self-performed by Smucker’s workforce. The project was completed in twelve months.

Upon entering the Boyd’s Bear Country, you step into a 40′ high open area with exposed timber framing and painted drywall creating a rustic, barn-like atmosphere. The retail area is spread out over three floors that overlook this open center area. Exposed escalators with detailed drywall work lead you to the various retail floors. The acoustical ceilings are unique in certain areas of the building because they are not attached to the side walls, giving them the appearance of “floating”. Also, in some areas there are no acoustical tiles, exposing the structure above through the open acoustical grid. The Food Court features radius drywall soffits and detailed drywall work on the walls of the dining areas.

In the large open center area the exposed timber framing and the escalators were installed before the metal studs and drywall. This made it difficult to work around some of these areas while working up to 40′ off the floor in this open area.

Most of the drywall work for this project was completed during the intense heat of the summer months. The Smucker employees had to be aware of their limitations and took extra precautions to avoid overexposure to the intense heat.
